Josef Škvorecký, an icon of Czech literature, was born on 27 September 1924 and is popular throughout the world. He caused a stir with his novel, Cowards, whose publication resulted in him being banned by the communist government. This added to its wild popularity, causing the novel to be completely sold out upon the lifting of the ban.
