Bimal Mitra completed his MA in Bengali literature in 1938 and thereafter, worked in the Railways in various capacities. In June 1956, he resigned as Deputy Chief Controller and took to freelance writing. He has contributed over 60 books and anthologies to Indian literature upon writing for three and a half decades. One of his most well-known works is Sahib, Biwi aur Ghulam, which was made into a popular Bollywood film. Mujrim Haazir, another of his works, was made into a TV serial. The works that were translated into Hindi for readers of the language to enjoy, include Sahib, Biwi aur Ghulam, Khareedi Kaudiyon ke Mol (two parts), Ikaai Dahaai Saikda, Begum Meri Vishwas (two parts), Daire ke Bahar, Raag Bhairvi, Subah ka Bhoola etc.
