Leo Tolstoy is one of the most respected authors of the nineteenth century. He was born in a wealthy family in Russia. He joined the Russian army and was enlisted to fight in the Crimean war (1855), but he left the army in the subsequent year. He was inclined towards writing since before he joined the army. His novels War and Peace (1865-69) and Anna Karenina (1857-77) are recognized classics in literary world.
