While an undergraduate student of economics in St Stephen’s College, Delhi University, Deepti Priya Mehrotra was active in street theatre and human rights movements. Later, she coordinated ‘Charkha’, a developmental communications network that encouraged grass-roots activists to write on various issues and helped place these writings in mainstream media.
As a PhD scholar in political science, Deepti studied contemporary women’s organizations in north India. A fellow of the Indian Council for Philosophical Research, her postdoctoral thesis is on Gender, Power and Knowledge.
Her current research interests include folk theatre, midwifery, arts therapy and developmental programmes on health and education. She teaches a paper on ‘Gender and Schooling’ in Lady Sri Ram College.
As founder-trustee of ‘Sampurna’, she is engaged in community-based women’s issues in Ambedkar Nagar, south Delhi.

She lives in New Delhi with her daughter.
