Vallabhbhai Patel (31 October 1875-15 December 1950) was born in Gujarat and was independent India’s first home minister and deputy prime minister. He was a successful lawyer and a leader of the Indian National Congress. Popularly known as Sardar Patel or ‘The Iron Man of India’, Patel had a vital role to play in the integration of India into a single republic and in providing relief and rehabilitation to refugees after Partition.
