Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda embarked on his naval journey in August 1971, kicking off a distinguished career that spanned 38 years.
Admiral Karannagoda was the first officer to be promoted to the rank of four-star Admiral while in active service. In August 2019, he was promoted to the prestigious ‘five-star’ rank of Admiral of the Fleet. He is the recipient of twelve medals, including Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) for bravery in the face of the enemy, Vishista Seva Vibhushanaya (VSV) for his exceptional and distinguish loyal service and Utthama Seva Padakkama (USP) for valuable service and devotion for duty, marked by exceptional ability, merit and exemplary conduct.
Upon retiring from the navy, Admiral Karannagoda was appointed as the National Security Adviser and Secretary of the Ministry of Highways. Later, in March 2011, he was appointed as the Ambassador to Japan, where he served for four years. Between December 2021 and May 2023, he was Governor of the Northwestern Province of Sri Lanka.
